Abstract: The exchangeable sodium ion in layered poly-silicates was ion-exchanged by transition metal ions M^<2+> (Co^<2+>, Ni^<2+>, Cu^<2+>). These ions formed complexes in the silicate layer. The complex consisted of cations and ligands (H_2O molecules, surface functional groups of ≡Si-OH and ≡Si-O^- on the silicate layer). The ion-exchanged layered poly-silicates were investigated by VIS-UV spectrometry, and the strength of crystal field of interlayer space was determined by comparing the spectrum of the solid samples and ions in liquid (water, ethyl alcohol). (1) When there were many H_2O molecules, M^<2+> ions between the silicate layers were influenced by the crystal field which was comparable to M^<2+> aquo complex. (2) When there were few H_2O molecules, M^<2+> ions were affected by the crystal field which was analogous to M^<2+> alcoholic complex.
